Military exercise in and around Opsterland

The Ministry of Defense trains regularly to be able to carry out its tasks properly and safely. In addition to exercises on military grounds, military personnel also train in populated areas. This prepares them for situations in which deployment outside of training grounds is necessary. From February 16 to 20, a military exercise will take place in and around the municipality of Opsterland.

What does the exercise involve?

The exercise is carried out by a unit from the Manoeuvre Training and Education Center, Technical Training Reconnaissance. This training is part of the training program for carrying out reconnaissance missions, both on foot and with vehicles.

  • Number of military personnel: approximately 30
  • Vehicles:
    • 4 x Volkswagen Amarok
    • 6 x Fennek
    • 2 x Mercedes-Benz CDI

Three groups are moving through the area from the training ground in Havelte. Each group consists of several vehicles. Along the way, the soldiers stop at various locations to explore intersections and bridges on foot (in pairs). They then continue on their route. The training area and main routes are indicated on the Map the image gallery below. You can also see what the vehicles look like here.

At the end of the day, the groups move to one of the locations they have explored, where they conduct observations throughout the night from a temporary observation post.

Nuisance and safety

  • No (practice) ammunition will be used during the exercise.
  • The exercise may be visible in the area, but it will be short-lived and carried out with as little disruption as possible.
