New Grant Opportunities for the Restoration of Historic Landmarks

Owners of historic buildings in Fryslân can take advantage of two restoration grant programs this year. In addition to the reinstatement of the grant for the restoration of historic farmhouse roofs, there is a new national program for large-scale restoration projects involving national historic landmarks. This means that both smaller and large-scale restoration projects are eligible for financial support.

Grant for Farmhouse Roof Repairs

In 2026, the province of Fryslân will once again make subsidies available for the restoration of historic farmhouse roofs. The program was previously successful in 2022 and 2023 and is intended to help restore roofs or replace non-traditional roofing materials, such as corrugated metal sheets, with traditional thatch or tile roofing.

Owners of both national and municipal historic monuments can apply for a grant of up to €25,000 for the restoration of one or more roof surfaces. To apply, applicants must submit, among other things, a scope of work, an itemized quote, and—in the case of a roof restoration—an inspection report from Monumentenwacht. Depending on the scope of the work, an environmental permit may also be required. Applications may be submitted from September 14 through September 18, 2026.

New Regulations for Major Restorations

For owners of national monuments facing major restoration projects, there is also a new national subsidy program. The government is making a one-time allocation of €45 million for this purpose. The program is intended for non-residential national monuments with restoration costs of €2.5 million or more. To distribute the available budget across multiple projects, there is a maximum of €10 million in eligible restoration costs per application. Green national monuments may also be eligible.

The grant will be made available in two application rounds: in the fall of 2026 and 2027. If the number of applications exceeds the available budget, priority will be given to projects with a lower requested grant percentage. Only restoration projects for which an environmental permit for national monument work has been granted are eligible for the grant.
