Global Goals
The municipality of Opsterland has been a Global Goals municipality since August 2019. With the title Global Goals municipality, the municipality shows that it considers sustainable development goals for a livable, safe and sustainable living environment important and wants to contribute to them. The coalition agreement includes a number of development goals. In the coming years, the goals will increasingly recur and also become more visible in the municipality.
What are the Sustainable Development Goals?
On Sept. 25, 2015, 193 world leaders committed to 17 goals to contribute to sustainable development worldwide. These Sustainable Development Goals, better known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals, were unanimously adopted by all member states and constitute a major shared sustainability agenda for the period up to 2030.
Not only internationally, but precisely at the local level, many of the sustainable development goals are interwoven into the tasks of municipalities. The specific commitment of municipalities is indispensable because many of the goals overlap with the tasks of local governments. Examples include the reduction of inequality, good education, a pleasant and safe living environment, sustainable production and consumption, and the circular economy. All 17 Global Goals contain sub-goals that are directly or indirectly related to the work of Dutch municipalities.
