What is the difference between an application, a decision and a notification?

If you want to arrange something with the municipality, you often encounter terms such as application, decision or notification. Below we explain what these terms mean and whether you can object.

  • Application: An application is a request from a resident or business to the government. It is not yet a decision. Therefore, you cannot object to an application.
  • Decision: A decision is an official decision of the municipality. It is legally binding. You can usually object to a decision. The decision itself will tell you if and how you can do that.
  • Notification: A notification is a communication from someone who wants to do something. The municipality takes note of it, but usually does not make a separate assessment. You usually cannot object to it.
