Smoking and burning ban | Increased risk of wildfires

Due to the ongoing drought and weather forecast, a smoking and heating ban is in effect in Opsterland as of today, April 2, 2025. This is on the advice of the fire department. There is also a ban on burning Easter fires.

In forests and natural areas it is forbidden to smoke and to light fires. In addition, it is prohibited throughout the municipality to light or have fires outdoors. One casually discarded cigarette butt or piece of glass can already be the cause of a fire that destroys a large natural area, according to the fire department. Therefore, be sensible and responsible with fire.

You may still light fires in your own yard, but be careful when doing so. Do not leave the fire or barbecue unattended and have a bucket of water ready. Because even in your garden or next to your home it is dry and fire can start. So it is important to be alert to that as well.

This is how you can prevent fires:

  • Don't smoke in natural areas, including that small patch close to home.
  • Follow the rules for the use of barbecues and fire pits.
  • Do not park your car in tall, dry grass - including near your home.
  • Throw trash - especially glass - in trash cans.
  • Do not use weed burners.
  • Do not discard burning or smoldering objects.

Does a fire still occur in a natural area? Then do the following:

  • Stay calm;
  • Do not try to put out the fire yourself;
  • Flee to a safe place: the public road, a large paved area or the built-up area;
  • Do not walk in front of the fire or in the direction of the fire, but at right angles to the seat of the fire;
  • Call 911 and report your location as accurately as possible.

Easter Fires

Because of the increased risk, Easter fires are also not allowed this year.

The smoking and smoking ban remains in effect for now.
