History of cemeteries
Each cemetery and cemetery has its own characteristics and features, for example, the particular design and layout of a cemetery and its green elements. The grave monuments, tombstones and other objects that make up a cemetery are also important.
The five cemeteries where active burials take place all have their own atmosphere and identity. The cemetery on the Gealeane in Beetsterzwaag has a wooded and private character, the one in Nij Beets, on the contrary, has a more open character. The origin history and geographical (landscape) structure are the basis for these differences. Moreover, they were constructed in different periods. As a result, there are different styles, but there are also similarities, such as the ponds of cemetery Hegedyk (national monument) in Gorredijk and cemetery Breewei in Tijnje.
