History of cemeteries
Each cemetery and cemetery has its own characteristics and features, for example, the particular design and layout of a cemetery and its green elements. The grave monuments, tombstones and other objects that make up a cemetery are also important.
The five cemeteries where active burials take place all have their own atmosphere and identity. The cemetery on the Gealeane in Beetsterzwaag has a wooded and private character, the one in Nij Beets, on the contrary, has a more open character. The origin history and geographical (landscape) structure are the basis for these differences. Moreover, they were constructed in different periods. Because of this there are different styles, but there are also similarities, such as the ponds of cemetery Hegedyk (national monument) in Gorredijk and cemetery Breewei in Tijnje.
