Wijnjewoude
Wijnjewoude (Wynjewâld) is one of the older villages in the municipality of Opsterland. It lies between the villages of Bakkeveen and Hemrik, near the eastern border of the municipality. Wijnjewoude is easily accessible via the N31 (the road between Oosterwolde and Drachten).

Origin of Wijnjewoude
Wijnjewoude was formed from two villages: Duurswoude and Wijnjeterp. These villages lay in the late Middle Ages on a sandy ridge between the rivers It Alddjip (Het Koningsdiep) and Tjonger. In 1974, they were merged into present-day Wijnjewoude.
Beautiful nature and recreation
The surroundings of Wijnjewoude are park-like and very suitable for recreation. In the 19th century the woods east of the village were laid out by order of the Lycklama à Nijeholt family. Wijnjewoude offers many opportunities for vacationers. There are campsites, mini campsites and nature campsites. The village has many hiking and cycling routes through the beautiful landscape.
A highlight is the Duurswouderheide, Fryslân's largest heathland. Here you will find ancient pingo ruins (small lakes) and a flock of sheep.
Special places in Wijnjewoude
In the Jan Anne forest is the fairy-tale Freulevijver, a wonderful place. There is also the nature trail in the Wijnterper Schar, which is managed by the State Forestry Administration. This path combines nature and culture thanks to the multilingual poetry route. Hikers can enjoy poems in three languages while walking through nature.
The Turf Route
Wijnjewoude lies on the Turfroute, an old sailing route popular through southeast Friesland. You can moor at special moorings, such as at Velde's Bosch and Klein Groningen, near the village. From Wijnjewoude there are beautiful walking and cycling tours through the wooded eastern part of Opsterland, past villages such as Beetsterzwaag, Hemrik and Bakkeveen.
