Hemrik
Hemrik (De Himrik), is a small and attractive village in the south of the municipality of Opsterland. The village is located on the road from Wijnjewoude to Gorredijk. The landscape of Hemrik consists of green meadows with wooded banks called hedgerows.
Surroundings
Several hiking, biking and equestrian trails can be found in the area. Hemrik lies among the heathland and near the valley of the small river It Alddjip. Hemrik lies along the Opsterlânske Kompanjonsfeart (Opsterlandse Compagnonsvaart). The Opsterlânske Kompanjonsfeart forms a striking element in the landscape. The canal was formerly used for the removal of peat, which is dried peat that used to be used as fuel. Nowadays the Opsterlânske Kompanjonsfeart is part of the Turfroute, a tourist sailing route that goes right through southeast Friesland. Along the Turfroute are characteristic houses of lock keepers. You can moor your boat in Hemrik and explore the beautiful surroundings on foot or by bicycle.
What to do in Hemrik
A special object in Hemrik is the Tram Bridge. This is across the Opsterlânske Kompanjonsfeart and was part of the track of the old streetcar line Oosterwolde-Gorredijk. In the village, "Het Koetshuis" is a nice place to take a break and have something to eat or drink. For children there is also plenty to do in Hemrik. Just outside the village is the adventure play forest Sparjebird of Staatsbosbeheer. There is also an outdoor swimming pool near the start of the Turfroute. Also stud farm 'Het Swarte Peart' is definitely worth a visit. In the vicinity of the village are several campsites, Bed & Breakfasts and hotels.
Churches
In Hemrik there are two beautiful old churches. There is the white church with bell tower and in the center a 12th-century church also with bell tower and cemetery with crypt of a wealthy family.
