New Year's Eve celebrations in Opsterland cause approximately €60,000 in damage
The New Year's celebrations in Opsterland caused considerable damage. Damage to municipal property amounts to approximately €30,000. In addition, businesses have reported approximately €10,000 in damage to the municipality, and Omrin has reported €20,000 in damage.
Although the New Year's celebrations were festive in most parts of the municipality, serious incidents occurred in Gorredijk in particular. Several acts of vandalism were committed and arson took place. Among other things, a restaurant on Hoofdstraat was damaged by an explosion involving heavy fireworks, which also endangered the apartment above. In addition, various facilities were vandalized in Hofland and Formanjestrjitte, among other places.

Mayor Andries Bouwman: "The damage shows how drastic this New Year's Eve has been for Gorredijk. Vandalism and arson not only cost a lot of money, but also create dangerous situations. We do not accept that. Every euro of damage is one too many. Where possible, we will recover the costs from those responsible as much as possible."
Three arrests
The police have launched an extensive investigation into the incidents that took place around New Year's Eve in Gorredijk. Based on camera footage, witness statements, and information provided via Report Crime Anonymously, three suspects have now been arrested on suspicion of arson and vandalism.
