You apply for an identity card in person at the municipality. To do so, go to the Public Center in the town hall in Beetsterzwaag. Children also have to come to the town hall themselves for their application. Up to the age of 12 they need permission to apply. You can read more about this below. After 5 working days you can pick up your identity card. Identity cards for persons 18 years and older are valid for 10 years. Persons younger than 18 years receive an identity card that is valid for 5 years. Please note that we work by appointment only.
Make an appointment
Is your identity card due to expire soon? Then don't wait until you really need the new document, but make an appointment now. Because of the passport peak, it is extra busy. The waiting times for an appointment keep increasing, especially towards the school vacations.
Bring
- All identity documents and passports you have (including expired documents and foreign travel documents).
- An appropriate passport photo. Please note the applicable requirements. The passport photo should be no more than 6 months old.
- Debit card or cash. You pay for the ID directly at the time of application.
- Do you have municipal tax forgiveness? If so, bring the letter you received about this. You may qualify for a free identity card.
- Children up to age 12 need permission from all people who have custody of the child. Usually these are the parents. You can arrange permission online with DigiD. Prefer paper copies? Then download the consent form as a PDF below and bring it with you to your appointment. Do not forget to bring proof of identity (not a copy!) of the custody holder(s)!

Rush request
Do you need your identity card quickly? Then make an urgent request. You can then pick up the identity card within 2 business days. Have you lost your old identity card? Then an urgent request is sometimes not possible.
Lost or stolen
Have you lost your identity card or has it been stolen? You no longer need to report it to the police first. Make an appointment at the Public Centre to stop by and apply for a new document. Did you apply for the missing passport in another municipality than Opsterland? Please report this by telephone before you visit so that we can request information from the other municipality. Is abuse suspected? Then the police will be called in. Abuse will be dealt with severely!
