ERE certificates: earn money by charging your electric car at home
From 2026, as the owner of an electric car, you will be able to earn money when you charge at home. This is due to the introduction of the new ERE certificates (Emission Reduction Units). These certificates show how much CO₂ you save by charging electrically. The system has been set up by the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa).

With this new system, the government aims to encourage the use of sustainable energy. Oil companies that market fossil fuels are legally required to purchase ERE certificates. This money goes to people with electric cars who charge at home.
How does it work?
When you charge your electric car at home, every kilowatt hour (kWh) charged is recorded. This registration results in ERE certificates. The value of these certificates is currently around €0.10 per kWh charged. For example, if you charge 50 kWh at home every week, you can earn around €260 per year.
The exact yield depends on:
- how much you charge per year
- the market price of the certificates
Which charging station do you need?
Not every charging station automatically qualifies for ERE certificates. Your charging station must have a MID-certified energy meter (Measuring Instruments Directive). This is an official meter that tracks how much power you actually charge. A separate MID meter in the meter cupboard is not suitable; the meter must be located in the charging station itself.
Charging stations at companies and homeowners' associations can also participate, as long as they have a MID meter.
In the Netherlands, applications and registration are handled via the government's official ERE register (Register Energie voor Vervoer, or Energy for Transport Register), which is managed by the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa). You cannot apply for ERE certificates directly yourself. This is done via a booking service provider. This party takes care of:
- registering your charging station
- recording your loaded kWh
- the sale of ERE certificates
- paying out your earnings
The service provider only receives read access to your charging station. They cannot adjust any settings.
Although the scheme still needs to be approved by the Senate, you can already register now. Register before May 1, 2026, to receive the full annual yield.
