How do I stay independent for as long as possible?
Limitations can make it more difficult to manage independently. Even then, it is important to stay active and moving for as long as possible. If you have difficulty walking (stairs) or cycling, you can seek help from a physical or occupational therapist. Through training and treatment, you may be able to learn to walk or cycle better again. Are you afraid of falling? Then you can use a fall prevention course.
Thinking about the future
If you have limitations, is your home still suitable? What can you arrange in advance so that you can continue to live safely in your home? It is important to think about this. You can also discuss this with your family and/or friends. Sometimes you do not want to think about this or you postpone it. Avoid unexpectedly facing difficult choices.
Make your home safe and convenient
With small modifications you can already make your home future-proof. For example, you can remove thresholds, install (wall) brackets, install an extra banister or buy threshold aids. Also consider smart technology such as personal alarms.
Is your bedroom and/or bathroom on the upper floor? You may be able to move them downstairs. If this is not possible, you may need a stairlift. You can ask a stairlift supplier if your stairs are suitable for a stairlift and what the costs are. You can start saving some money for this.
