Step by step toward a more comfortable and energy-efficient home
Margot has been living in an old farmhouse just outside Tijnje for about 30 years. Recently, with the help of energy consultants, energy coaches, and energy experts, she has taken several steps to make her home more comfortable and energy-efficient.

“I’d read about grants and energy-saving measures before, but I never really got around to it. It was always something I put off until later.” When Margot Stobbe saw an article in GrootSa! late last year, she decided to take the plunge. “That article gave me just the nudge I needed to contact the city and the energy advisor.”
The first step: contact the energy advisor
The first step was a meeting with an energy consultant from the municipality. According to Margot, it went very smoothly. “He came to my home, explained everything clearly, and helped me get started with requesting quotes and grants for major energy-saving measures, such as replacing windows and installing cavity wall insulation.” Every time Margot received a quote, she forwarded it right away to Bas. “He contributed ideas, offered advice, and kept track of everything—but always let me make the decisions myself. I really appreciated that because I like to be in control.”
The work: new windows and cavity wall insulation
The biggest problem in Margot’s home was a room with single-pane windows. Whenever the east wind blew in, it got freezing cold in there. “We did heat the house, but the heat just escaped right out the window. It really felt like we were heating the outdoors.”
The windows have now been replaced, and the heat stays inside the house much better. “The work was done beautifully. Everything was finished neatly, left tidy, and carried out professionally. I’m really very happy with it, and the house already feels much more comfortable.”
The cavity wall will be insulated in the near future. Margot expects this measure to yield significant benefits, both financially and in terms of comfort.
The Energy Fixer: Small Energy-Saving Measures
When Margot saw another article in GrootSa! in January—this time about support for energy fixers—she jumped right on it. The major measures had already been arranged and partially implemented, but there was still room for improvement in the home.
Energy coach Ernst and energy consultant Wiebe stopped by to see what small energy-saving measures they could implement. They installed draft stoppers and radiator wrap and replaced old incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs. “The two men took their time and went through the entire house. They left no stone unturned in making the home more energy-efficient and comfortable.”
Experiences and advice for others
Margot found the support very helpful. “They really think things through with you, take you seriously, and help you every step of the way.”
Margot’s advice for those who are still on the fence? “Just do it! Get in touch and start the process. You don’t have to do it alone, and it really pays off.”
Margot has already shared her experiences with friends and acquaintances, and this has already led to new projects. If you’d also like to take advantage of the available grant programs and free support from energy consultants, coaches, or fixers, please send an email to energie@opsterland.nl.
