Wider navigation times on the Polderhead Canal
The opening hours of bridges and locks in the Polder Main Canal will be extended in the coming boating season. Recreational boating will be possible into the evening hours this summer.
The municipalities of Opsterland and Smallingerland are thus complying with requests from Plaatselijk Belang Nij Beets and Dorpsbelangen De Veenhoop. In previous seasons, the passage of bridges and locks for boats was barred after 4:30 in the afternoon.
During the upcoming boating season, from May 15 through September 15, the Polderhead Canal will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the morning. Also on Sundays. For residents of the villages along the canal and for recreationists, it will now be easier to sail longer routes. The adjusted times also match the bridge times in Grou and Akkrum.
Switch Turf Route
"We do everything we can to make pleasure boating as attractive and convenient as possible," reasons Alderman Rob Jonkman of the Opsterland municipality. "For our residents and for recreationists who choose the Polderhoofdkanaal via the Turfroute."
According to Alderman Felix Van Beek of the Smallingerland municipality, De Veenhoop forms an attractive link between the De Alde Feanen National Park and southeast Friesland. "The village is a full-fledged entrance to De Turfroute," he said.
