Carbide Shooting

Carbide shooting is part of New Year's Eve for many people. To make carbide shooting as safe as possible, a number of guidelines have been established.

Requirements

The following rules apply to carbide shooting this year:

  • the landowner must consent (in writing);
  • carbide shooting is permitted only with a milk can and/or similar object with a maximum capacity of 50 liters;
  • shooting carbide is only allowed on New Year's Eve (Dec. 31, 2025) between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m;
  • of the site a (current) situational drawing of the site is provided;
  • the place from which shooting is located:
    • at a distance of at least 75 meters from homes or buildings, through paths or roads and high-risk objects such as gas stations, LPG tanks and the like;
    • at a distance of at least 300 meters from in-use animal husbandry facilities;
  • the applicant and/or contact person is easily visible and accessible in connection with a possible inspection;
  • only a ball and not a milk can lid may be shot;

If you are going to organize an event in addition to carbide shooting, do not forget to also apply for an event permit/notification small event. This can also be done through the website.

Would you like to shoot carbide on New Year's Eve in the municipality of Opsterland? Then you must notify the municipality. In order to process all notifications in a timely manner, we request that you submit your notification before November 30, but no later than December 15.

The 5 tips for safe carbide shooting

Carbide shooting is a wonderful tradition that, in addition to the familiar banging, provides a lot of conviviality and fun at the turn of the year. But do you want to keep it cozy? Then above all, shoot safely! 

  • Prepare well. And inquire with the municipality about Requirements and Permits early.
  • Protect yourself and others. Use hearing protection and wear safety glasses.
  • Health for first aid. And for adequate fire extinguishers (water for cooling, fire blanket) so you can act properly, should something go wrong.
  • Use good equipment. Use only a milk can in good condition with a solid bottom. Shoot with a plastic ball instead of a milk can lid and Health that the canister - after igniting - cannot shoot backwards.
