Report lost object

Have you lost an item? You can report it in three ways:

Your information will be recorded with us. If your object is found, we will contact you. After your report, have you found the object again? If so, please report it to the Public Center.

Passport, identity card or driver's license lost

Have you lost your passport, identity card or driver's license? These documents are the property of the Dutch state. You must report this to the municipality and also request a new document there. We ensure that the number of your lost or stolen document is entered into the national system. This makes it clear everywhere that the document is invalid. You do not have to report it to the police (unless it is a foreign document or residence permit). You can stop by the Public Center to report it and immediately request a new document.

Report found object

Do you find something on the street? For example, a wallet, bicycle, bunch of keys or identity card? This object is the legal property of the municipality in which you found it. You can report a found object in three ways:

Turn it in or keep it at home?

The municipality keeps a found object for three months if the value is less than €450. Is the value higher than €450? Then we keep the object for twelve months. If the owner has not come forward after twelve months, you will receive a letter or e-mail. You can then claim the object within one month. This only applies to objects with a value higher than €450. You cannot become the owner of surrendered objects that are worth less.

You may also keep a found object at home. You will receive a letter or e-mail if the owner of the object has not come forward after 12 months. You then become the owner of the object. Only found passports, identity cards and driving licenses you may not keep at home. These documents remain the property of the state.

Does the owner of a found object not report within the legal deadline? And does the finder not claim the object? Then the municipality may sell, give away or destroy the object.
