October 24: Opsterland History Day

Are you interested in the history and heritage of Opsterland? If so, be sure to mark Saturday, October 24, on your calendar.

During Opsterland History Day, we cordially invite you to learn more about Opsterland’s past. In and around City Hall, you’ll find a wide-ranging information fair where historical societies, museums, and heritage organizations will be showcasing their work. The program also includes lectures, vintage film clips, and guided tours, among other activities.

Discover the remarkable stories behind historical artifacts and documents, and talk to the people who work every day to preserve our local heritage.

Program:

1:15 p.m.: Doors open.

Lycklamahûs:

  • Information fair featuring representatives from museums and historical societies.
  • Short guided walk through Lycklama Park, at 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. (max. 15 participants per tour).

Public Hall: Continuous screening of old film clips.

Council Chamber: Short lectures/presentations

1:30 p.m.: Opening remarks by the mayor, featuring “ ” and the unveiling of the panel displaying Opsterland’s birth records.

2:00 p.m.: Newspapers in Opsterland; the history of the *Woudklank* and its predecessors. By Rien F. Inniger.

2:30 p.m.: In Tsjinstfaam in Opsterland. By Pytsje van der Sluis & Reitze Jonkman.

3:00 p.m.: Peat extraction in Western Opsterland beginning around 1750. By Nynke van der Laan.

3:30 p.m.:

  • Governance in Opsterland, 1975–1995. Public interview with Mayor Andries Bouwman and former Mayor Joost van Bodegom.
  • Performance by Adri de Boer from approximately 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Café De Posthoorn).

4:00 p.m.: What Makes Opsterlân Special? A Broad Overview of Opsterlân’s History. By Arend Waninge.

4:30 p.m.: Closing.
