Cemeteries
Municipal cemeteries are owned by the municipality. They are managed by the municipality. The special cemeteries belong, in many cases, to a denomination. Crematoria can be found in Drachten, Heerenveen, Goutum and Groningen, among other places.

Within the municipality of Opsterland are both municipal cemeteries and special cemeteries. Opsterland municipality has five municipal cemeteries:

- Nij Beets

- Gorredijk De Leijen (also known as Kortezwaag)

- Opsterland Municipality only issues private graves, which are regular graves or urn graves.
- The cemeteries in Beetsterzwaag, Tijnje and Gorredijk De Leijen have an urn wall where an ash container is interred in a niche.
- The butterfly stone is a memorial stone for people who have lost a baby due to a miscarriage or an aborted pregnancy. They can place a glass memorial butterfly on the butterfly stone in their memory. The Beetsterzwaag Gealeane and De Leijen (Kortezwaag) cemeteries each have a butterfly stone.
