The House of Representatives

The 150 members of the House of Representatives represent the Dutch people. Together with the government, the Lower House makes new laws and checks whether the government is doing its job properly. In addition, the Lower House plays an important role in making policy.

This is what happens to your voice

On the day of the Lower House elections, you may vote if you are 18 years of age or older and have Dutch nationality. This is how you let it be known which political party you want in the House of Representatives for the next four years. The more votes a party gets in the elections, the more seats in the Lower House. Once the votes are counted after the elections, the largest party will look for other parties to form a government with. Together they will draw up a coalition agreement in which they agree on how they will govern the Netherlands for the next four years.
