Nature Restoration at the Olterterp-Lauswolt Estate

At the Olterterp-Lauswolt estate, Bosgroep Noord-Oost Nederland will restore nature and make it more resilient. Below, you can read about what will happen and why it’s important for the company to take on this project.

At the Olterterp-Lauswolt estate, Bosgroep Noord-Oost Nederland is working to restore and strengthen the natural environment so that it can better withstand both dry and wet periods.

The estate is known for its varied landscape of forests, heathlands, and fens. The fens, in particular, play an important role in the area’s natural value. They provide an indispensable habitat for various animal and plant species, including grass snakes, moor frogs, pool frogs, and various species of dragonflies.

Why is this repair necessary?

Research shows that water is not distributed evenly in the area. In the summer, the forest is too dry. In the winter, on the other hand, it is too wet. Plants and animals need a stable environment that remains moist in the right places. By taking certain measures, we can better retain water. This way, we ensure that nature can thrive and is ready for the future (a future-proof landscape).

What's going to happen?

To keep water in the area longer, the following work will be carried out:

  • A number of ditches will be made shallower or partially or completely filled in.
  • The waterways and culverts (pipes under the roads) are being modified so that the water drains away more slowly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find the frequently asked questions about this project. If your question is not listed here, please contact Bosgroep Noord-Oost Nederland.

What are hydrological measures?

Hydrological measures are changes made to the water in an area. “Hydrological” refers to anything related to water. These measures help ensure that water is retained more effectively or flows more freely.

What's going to happen?

At the Olterterp-Lauswolt estate, we are working to restore and strengthen the natural environment so that it can better withstand both dry and wet periods. To retain water in the area for longer:

  1. we make the ditches shallower or partially fill them in;
  2. we are modifying waterways and culverts.

Why are hydrological measures important?

By retaining water:

  1. improve the living and growing conditions for plants and animals;
  2. the estate's unique natural values will be preserved for the future.

When will the work take place?

The work will be carried out after the breeding season, from mid-July through October 2026.

How are the construction works affecting you?

During this period, there is a great deal of transportation activity to, from, and within the estate due to the delivery of sand and work on ditches and waterways.

As a result, the forest will be temporarily busier, and there may be more noise. Road plates will be laid in some areas of the forest to protect roads and trails.

How is the project funded?

This project is being carried out on property owned by ASR Levensverzekering N.V., with support from the European Union (NextGenerationEU) and in collaboration with the Province of Friesland.
