Luxwoude

Luxwoude is a small village in the municipality of Opsterland. It originated when people removed the peat in the area. The village has houses and farms along three roads: the Hegedyk, the Alde Leane and the Lúkster Heawei.

Location of Luxwoude

Luxwoude is located in the west of the municipality of Opsterland, in an area where peat used to be excavated. The village is close to the A7 highway, between Gorredijk and Heerenveen, and is accessible from Tijnje, Gorredijk and Tjalleberd.

Smallest village in Opsterland

Long ago, Luxwoude was the smallest village in Opsterland. Only ten people lived there who had the right to vote. In 1749 there were only three families in the village. Later, at the end of the 18th century, more people came to live because of work in peat extraction.

No church of its own

Luxwoude never had a church. In the 16th century the inhabitants went to church in Gersloot, a nearby village.
