Fair Trade

Opsterland can call itself a Fairtrade Municipality. This title indicates that shops, restaurants, businesses, organizations, and the municipal organization in our municipality are working together to promote fair trade. This enables farmers and producers in developing countries to improve their own living conditions and build a future for their businesses, their families, and their communities.

Fairtrade Town is an honorary title that indicates that a municipality pays particular attention to fair trade. The municipality receives the title when the local community meets six campaign criteria:

  1. A working group promotes fair trade
There is a local working group that takes initiatives to obtain and maintain the title of Fairtrade Municipality.

  2. Local government chooses fair trade
The municipal council has declared its support for fair trade. The municipality has incorporated this into its policy and purchases fair trade products.

  3. Shops and restaurants sell fair trade products
Local shops sell clearly labeled fair trade products. Restaurants serve fair trade products.

  4. Companies and organizations use fair trade
Local companies and social organizations purchase and use fair trade products.

  5. Local (media) attention for fair trade
There is a strategy in place to keep the campaign in the news for a long time. The working group organizes public events.

  6. Encourage corporate social responsibility
The working group supports or undertakes initiatives that contribute to sustainability.
