October 22: Reading and Writing Activity Day
On Thursday, October 22, we are organizing the Reading and Writing Activity Day in Opsterland.
The Reading and Writing Activity Day is for anyone who wants to learn more about basic skills or improve their proficiency in these areas. Partners and family members are also welcome. You’ll discover the challenges people may face and how you can help. The day is also of interest to professionals who, in their work, encounter people who struggle with reading, writing, math, or digital skills.

The Reading and Writing Activity Day is free. You don't need to register.

There's plenty to do and discover during Activity Day.
The Escape Caravan and Movies
In the Escapecaravan, you’ll complete various challenges. This will give you a firsthand experience of the difficulties people face when reading and writing aren’t easy. Please note: Be sure to register in advance for a time slot!
There are also films about basic skills. These show what it’s like to struggle with things like reading, writing, or digital tasks.
Bring a difficult letter with you
Did you receive a letter that you don't quite understand? If so, bring it to the "Letter Washer." Symbolically place the letter in the machine and review it together with a Humanitas volunteer.
The volunteer will explain what the letter says and what you might need to do. The "Lees Simpel" app can be used for this, for example. Do you need more help? If so, the volunteer can tell you where to go.
Hopefully, this will give you a clearer understanding before you go home.
Find out what help is available
During the Reading and Writing Activity Day, you can learn about various types of support. You’ll receive information on:
- learn Dutch better;
- help with using a computer, tablet, phone, and the Internet;
- the library's digital Q&A session;
- Assistance from Humanitas with matters such as taxes, benefits, and administrative tasks.
You can also talk to people with personal experience and volunteers. They’ll share their own experiences and tell you about the help that’s available.
For Children and Parents
Storytime is held for young children. Parents receive tips on how they can help their children with language development at home.
Take a look inside the Makerlab
Be sure to visit the library's Maker Lab, too. There, you'll be introduced to new technologies, engineering, and programming.
