Update: Vierverlaten - Ens
There will be a new high-voltage connection between Vierverlaten (Groningen) and Ens (Northeast Polder). This connection is important to be able to supply sufficient power in the future and to make room for sustainable energy. The government is now investigating which route (route) is most suitable for this.
What happened?
On May 21, the Frisian municipalities, the Wetterskip and the Provinsje Fryslân discussed the possible routes together. Among the topics considered were:
- Effects on landscape and wildlife;
- The future-proofing of the connection;
- Its combination with other plans, such as the Lelyline.
There is currently a slight preference at the provincial level for a route that connects as much as possible to the existing high-voltage line (Burgum - Leeuwarden). This would affect the landscape less and is technically feasible.
How does it go from here?
Several consultations with administrators from municipalities and the province will take place in the coming period. Together they are working toward a joint recommendation to the national government. That advice must be ready before the summer.
College of b&w position
In a council letter dated June 12, 2025, the Opsterland Municipal Board states the following:
"We as a college are concerned about a possible bundling with the A7. Obviously, that route is not in the interests of Opsterland, but also for the sake of the Lelyline and the interests of Fryslân as a whole, we believe that it is more defensible if the 380 kV connection is bundled with the already existing high-voltage connection via Burgum and Leeuwarden. In all consultations and on all occasions we will of course put forward our position as strongly as possible. We will therefore not go along with a regional opinion that advocates the A7 bundling route."
