Grant for foundation repair homes peatland area
The Province of Fryslân and Wetterskip Fryslân are making grants available to help with the costs of foundation repair or replacement new construction. This scheme is part of the Peat Meadow Program and is intended to support residents in the peat meadow area with problems caused by subsidence in the peat area.
In the Frisian peat meadow area, thousands of homeowners are at risk of experiencing foundation problems at some point. In many cases, these are pre-1973 houses built on wooden piles. When these piles are no longer fully submerged due to subsidence and low groundwater levels, pile rot can occur and foundations can sink. This is often evident, for example, in cracks in walls or in windows and doors that close with difficulty. These phenomena can also have other causes, such as construction defects or an overweight roof. In such cases, it is important to conduct research, in order to identify the cause.
Grant for recovery
Starting June 23, 2025, the province and water board will open a subsidy scheme that will allow owners of homes with foundation damage in the peat meadow area to receive money for repairs or - if necessary - replacement new construction. This subsidy reimburses 40 percent of the repair costs incurred, up to a maximum of €40,000 per house. You can apply through the website www.veenweidefryslan.frl. The subsidy is intended for people who own and occupy a home in the peat meadow area and for Owner Associations (VvEs) whose members live in their own apartment.
Demonstrable damage
These are houses built before 1973 in which a foundation survey by a recognized agency shows that there is demonstrable damage. For this investigation, the province and water board created a separate subsidy scheme in early 2024. This reimburses 80 percent of the investigation costs, up to a maximum of €4000 per home. Last year the Funderingsloket Fryslân was also opened, where residents can get information and help.
