In 2012, Opsterland municipality, in cooperation with Provinsje Fryslân, started a deepening effort to produce up-to-date archaeological policy advisory maps and resource maps. These will be completed by 2025. The municipality has various statutory duties in the field of archaeological preservation, including ensuring adequate protection of the soil archive and informing initiators with plans in public space as fully as possible. The Omgevingswet also requires municipalities to safeguard archaeological values in the environmental plan. This can only be done by having up to date archaeological maps and policies, and by increasing the visibility and awareness of archaeology within the municipality. With the policy and new map images, the legal duties and requirements are met and, in addition, efforts are made to raise awareness, information, participation and public outreach. 

Respond?

During the period that the draft policy memorandum is available for review, anyone can:

• submit a written response to the said policy memorandum to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen of Opsterland, Postbus 10.000, 9244 ZP Beetsterzwaag;
• orally submit a comment on the aforementioned policy memorandum (after explicit mention) to the Housing and Works team. To do so, please contact the Wonen en Werken secretariat, tel. (0512) 386 222.

How does it continue?

After the expiration of the above period, a final report of the public participation will be prepared by the College of B&W. Respondents will be sent this report. Following this, the college will adopt "Spoaren út it ferline. Beleidsnotitie Archeologie 2025-2031" to the city council, amended or otherwise. After adoption by the City Council, publication of the adopted policy memorandum will follow. The day after this final publication, the policy memorandum will then enter into force.
