First-ever OpSTERland Award presented
November 21, the Day of the Entrepreneur, started a new tradition in Opsterland: the very first presentation of the "OpSTERland Award." The award for the Entrepreneur of the Year in Opsterland.
And how fantastic it was to be able to present the award at the company itself! A real surprise, warmly received, exactly as this award is meant to be: close to the entrepreneur, with an eye for passion and craftsmanship.
The finals of the Frisian Enterprise of the Year election in Beetsterzwaag prompted us to pay structural attention to our entrepreneurs in Opsterland as well. Many innovative and leading companies are active in our municipality; this new annual tradition offers us a fitting way to put them in the sunlight.
For this first edition, Alderman Marcel van Opzeeland and the Economic Affairs team (Harry Berga and Paula Uuldriks) chose Wiegers Process Innovations (WPI) from Gorredijk, a company that has been pioneering the local economy for years.

WPI focuses on the continuous improvement and sustainability of processes in its own innovation center, helping companies worldwide to work future-proof. Since its founding in 2003, Paul and Joukje Wiegers have worked from one principle: if a solution does not yet exist, it will be developed. With a team of 18 employees, they support both local and international entrepreneurs from Gorredijk.
WPI also demonstrates their added value regionally. They demonstrate daily that business processes can be made smarter, more efficient and more sustainable. Some examples:
- A new building with room for growth and for startups
- An innovation center where customers can view and improve processes
- Customized solutions that contribute to sustainable business progress
Today we presented WPI with a gift featuring the relief of the municipality and an engraved nameplate marking this first edition.
Opsterland: where entrepreneurs shine! Here's to many more shining, inspiring editions!
