Growing up in an Opportunity Environment
The municipality of Opsterland participates in the national program Growing up in a Promising Environment, an initiative of the Trimbos Institute in cooperation with other national partners. The goal of this program is for children and young people to grow up in a healthy, safe and stimulating living environment with extra attention to increasing mental health and preventing substance use.
Why this program?
Children and youth who grow up in an opportunity-rich environment have better chances for a healthy and happy life. Research shows that a positive environment - at home, at school, in the neighborhood and in leisure time - plays a major role in the development of young people. Within this program, we therefore work together with parents, schools, sports clubs and other local parties to reduce risks.
What are we doing in Opsterland?
In Opsterland, we are committed to:
- Delaying the use of alcohol, tobacco and other substances among young people.
- Parent education and support on parenting, setting boundaries and the conversation about substance use.
- Collaborate with schools, sports clubs and youth work to promote a healthy living environment.
- Awareness campaigns on peer pressure, resilience and social norms, among other topics.
- Training for professionals working with young people.
Who is this for?
This program is designed for:
- parents and guardians;
- young people themselves;
- professionals who work with youth and/or their parents (such as teachers, youth workers and caregivers);
- volunteers and administrators within associations and community organizations.
Together we make a difference
Working together, we are building an environment where our youth can grow up healthy and full of opportunity. Want to know more about this program or contribute yourself? Contact Ms. T. van Houten, municipal project leader, telephone 0512 386 222 or visit the Trimbos Institute website.
