Ukrainian delegation visits Fryslân province and Opsterland municipality

Monday, May 19, 2025, the Province of Fryslân and the Municipality of Opsterland hosted a Ukrainian government delegation as part of a working visit to the Netherlands. The visit took place at the initiative of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG). The purpose: knowledge exchange on regional cooperation, local governance and European cooperation.

In the morning, the delegation was welcomed at the provincial government building in Leeuwarden by the Commissioner of the King, Mr. Arno Brok and the Mayor of the Municipality of Leeuwarden, Sybrand van Haersma Buma. This was followed by a presentation by the Frisian company TecNed and a presentation by the EuropaPact. The focus was on cooperation within Europe.

In the afternoon, the delegation visited the municipality of Opsterland. There they were received by Mayor Andries Bouwman and Alderman Rob Jonkman. Aldermen Jan van Weperen (Ooststellingwerf) and Roelof Theun Hoen (Weststellingwerf) were also present. During this visit, practical examples were shared about cooperation between municipalities and the role of municipalities during crisis situations.

The day will conclude with a visit to museum It Damshûs in Nij Beets, including a boat tour and an explanation of the European project Polderhoofdkanaal.
