Waste tax

The municipality, through Omrin, collects garbage from all households every week. You pay waste collection fees for collecting and processing the waste, even if you never bring your waste.

Diftar+

Opsterland works with differentiated rates, also known as diftar/diftar+. This means that not everyone pays the same amount of waste collection tax. The amount of waste collection tax is partly determined by the number of times your container is emptied and the number of kilograms of residual waste.

Rates for 2026

Flat rate

Everyone pays the fixed part of the waste disposal fee. If you move to another municipality, you will get the money back from the months you no longer live in Opsterland.

The fixed rate is €207.00 per plot per year.

Variable rate

You pay the variable part of the waste disposal charges if you live in a "normal" house (low-rise) or in a high-rise (apartment) where there is an underground collection container with a card system. You then pay each time we empty your gray or green container or each time you throw a bag in the container.

Type2026
Gray container (residual waste) 240 liters€1.00 per emptying + €0.30 per kilo
Green container (organic waste) 240 liters €1.00 per emptying
Waste bag from 40 to 60 liters (underground Waste container) €1.40 per bag
Container for waste paper €0.00 per emptying

Fixed-variable rate

You pay the fixed-variable part of the waste collection fee if you live in a flat or apartment complex with several floors (high-rise) and use a communal container.

  • Single-person household €47.00
  • Multi-person household €90.00

The fixed and fixed-variable rates of the waste collection are listed on the tax assessment you receive annually in February. Also, all container charges from the previous year are imposed at once.

If you have an income at the assistance level, you can apply for remission of municipal taxes. You will then only have to pay part of the municipal taxes, or none at all. For the variable portion, or container fees, there is a maximum remission amount of €75.00 euros.

Discount on garbage tax

Illness or a medical condition can result in more waste than average, for example if you are incontinent, have a stoma, or suffer from kidney disease. In that case, you will need to have your container emptied more often. If this applies to you, you can receive a €50.00 discount on the fixed portion of your waste collection fee. To qualify, you will need a medical certificate from a doctor.
