Municipalities and organizations in Southeast Fryslân join forces against online crime

Online crime has been rising sharply in recent years. Fake emails asking people to pay for something, fake emails, fraud via Marketplace or a phone call from the bank are everyday occurrences. Especially people over 45 are increasingly becoming victims. Time for joint action, think the municipalities of Heerenveen, Ooststellingwerf, Weststellingwerf and Opsterland. Therefore they join hands with 9 organizations in Southeast Fryslân. They will work together to make the over-45s aware and resilient against online crime. On Thursday, June 26, all parties signed a declaration of intent.

Making residents aware and resilient

Today, the impact of online crime is at least as high as that of traditional crimes. The parties want to prevent more victims by making residents aware and resilient. Fake phone calls asking people to pay for something, fake emails, fraud via Marketplace or a phone call from the bank are everyday occurrences. By joining forces it becomes easier to keep each other informed of the latest developments in the field of online safety, but also to deploy and support each other. Consider a digital neighborhood cop who teaches seniors in a nursing home through an interactive film.

Theater show online crime

Even before the signing of the letter of intent, various parties were already working together on online safety. A good example is the theater show about online crime that took place in April in the Posthuis Theater. Senior citizens of the municipalities of Heerenveen, Ooststellingwerf, Weststellingwerf and Opsterland were invited to attend. Last year's Mobile Media Lab in Heerenveen, Wolvega and Oosterwolde was also a great success. The municipalities want to organize such events and actions together more often, Mayor Van der Graaf indicated.

Signature

The letter of intent was signed by the municipality of Heerenveen, municipality of Opsterland, municipality of Weststellingwerf, municipality of Ooststellingwerf, Police Oost-Fryslân, Police Zuidoost-Fryslân, Cooperative Rabobank, RegioBank Van Campen & Dijkstra, RegioBank De Goede, Library Zuidoost-Fryslân, Code Hans, MeiJo and Sûnenz.
